TOPIC: ECFLOW_UI no commands possible

ECFLOW_UI no commands possible 8 months 4 days ago #2532

Hi, We are running validation runs (cy40h2.1.1) and with ecflow_ui I cannot requeue, rerun, or do other commands with ecflow_ui. Only very few times it succeeded in performing these tasks. This is very annoying, especially as mars requests often abort. Apart from this ecflow_ui itself often aborts. Do other people experience the same and is there a solution? Many thanks!

Hi Wim,

Not sure what version of ecFlow you are using. ecflowview might be a more stable viewer than ecflow_ui. If you are launching the viewer remotely on the Bull it might be easier to do some port forwarding from your PC with something like:
ssh bull_account@bull_login_node -C -N -L $ECF_PORT:login2.bullx:$ECF_PORT &

where ECF_PORT is the port number used by your ecFlow server (found in ECF.log).

You can then view the suite on your PC with localhost:ECF_PORT.

Thanks Eoin. I use ecflow_ui 4.17.2 at ecmwf (ecgate). I tried ecflowview but am not used to it, do ot even know how to unfold an experiment 0-|...

ecflow viewers launched from ecgate are nearly unusable (or you need to be very patient!).

What I do is do some port-forwarding using Teleport.

Have a look at:
https://confluence.ecmwf.int/display/UDOC/Teleport+SSH+Access and https://confluence.ecmwf.int/display/ECFLOW/Teleport+-+using+local+ecflow_ui

I think Bert and Toon have managed Teleport.

I forward my ecFlow port using:
ssh -J nli@shell.ecmwf.int nli@ecgate -C -N -L 3522:ecgb-vecf:3522

Many thanks Eoin! I will try this tomorrow.
Maybe something that should be communicated to a broader audience..

with much help from Bert I succeeded to succefully login to teleport. However, when I tried the ssh to ecgate I get no prompt. When stopping with control d I see connection closed to ecgate so something is working. Using the suggestion of Bert to use 'ssh ecgate -vvv' I got a very long output which seems to be okay apart from

debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information
No Kerberos credentials available (default cache: KCM:)

Anybody any idea what is going wrong?

Maybe the key to my problem with ecflow_ui is shown by a small picture in the ecflow_ui terminal of a floppy disk with the text: "slow writing of checkpoint file or log errors". Does anybody have an idea if this is a serious problem?

ps just send an email to ecmwf with the teleport problem mentioned above

Hi Wim,

ECMWF Service Desk might be in a position to provide some quick answers on Teleport/ssh access. Hopefully interaction with ecFlow will be less painful once your Teleport access is in order.

Posted below is not correct (maybe just a coincidence). I still got the problem that ecflow_ui does not react (almost never) to commands with mouse like requeue!

about no ecflow_ui response:
first clear kill flag of the process (e.g. mars request) and then requeue seems to help

I looked in my .ecflowrc directory and noticed that in my (nli) nli.options file connect was false (in contrast with some other users). I have put it to true and checked the response by suspending processes -> immediate response! (coincidence?)

Eoin,
just to let you know that this works very well!
Many thanks
